| The Olathe Cyclones offer three programs to encompass all levels of swimmers and divers:
COMPETITIVE SWIM Age Requirements Swimmers & Divers will compete at their age level. Age groups will be determined by the participant’s age as of June 1, 2026. Participants must be 18 years or younger on that date to be eligible. Eligibility Individuals must compete for the city in which their primary residence is located if that city has a member team. An exception may be made if the individual lives closer to a neighboring city’s pool. Other cities with teams participating in the Johnson County Swim & Dive League are Fairway, Leawood, Lenexa, Merriam, Overland Park, Prairie Village, Roeland Park, Jewish Comm Ctr & Shawnee. Individuals may participate on more than one competitive team during the summer league season. USA League swimmers may swim if they are participating in a year-round program during the summer season. Registration Registration is offered via the register here button on this website $155 Resident/$170 Non-Resident Swim or Dive only $235 Resident/$255 Non-Resident Swim and Dive Refunds If a partial refund is requested—such as when a participant is enrolled in both swim and dive and chooses to drop dive—prior to the completion of the first full week of the season, a $5 processing fee will be deducted from the difference in registration costs.
Dive Practice Dive practices and meets are held at Black Bob Bay. We ask that the divers select the one hour practice that works best for them and stick with it for the entire season. Time slots available are: Monday-Friday (excluding Holidays): 9:00 AM-10:00 AM, 10:00 AM-11:00 AM, or 11:00 AM-12:00 PM. Swim Practice Swim practices (as well as competitive (advanced and intermediate) home swim meets) are held at Black Bob Bay (pre-competitive home swim meets are held at Oregon Trail Pool). Please check the calendar for the most accurate practice schedule:
Parent Volunteers Competitive Swimmers (Intermediate or Advanced): We recognize that volunteering may not be possible for every family. If you require an alternative volunteer opportunity not listed in the Swimtopia Volunteer Section, please reach out to us by June 10th. If you do not fulfil the volunteer requirement we will bill you for $25 after the season is over. Pre-Competitive Swimmers: Divers: The Head Dive Coach will request volunteers for meets, but there is no fee for not volunteering. |
Pre-Competitive swimmers should be able to swim 25 yards unassisted. Swimmers who are 13 years of age or younger, know only one or two strokes, and/or can swim 25 meters without stopping, will most likely be pre-competitive swimmers. Pre-competitive swimmers will swim 25-yard events in the pre-competitive meets and will practice in a 25 yard setting. This is not intended to teach children to swim, but is to develop their strokes and endurance to prepare them for competition. Advancement to the competitive level will be the decision of the coaches.
Our Pre-Competitive team is for those swimmers aged between 6 and 13. Generally, they have never been on a team and are not the strongest swimmers. However, this is not swim lessons. The swimmer will need to be able to swim freestyle, or close to freestyle, an entire length across the pool, without help of the coach. If they are unable to do this, we suggest another year of swim lessons to prepare for our team.
Practices (10:50 AM to 11:45 AM).
We practice at Black Bob Bay, swimming across the pool. This is 25 yards long. Our goal for practices is to create a fun environment where we can work on one or two strokes a day.
Swim Meets:
The athletes are encouraged to compete in our simple swim meets that are held on Saturday mornings, from 8:00 AM to 10:30 AM, approximately. There may also be a couple of Pre-Competitive intersquad meets on Friday morning. If the swimmer is unable attend, we do not hold that against them. There are no sign-ups for the meets, just show up and race!
The pre-competitive season is over at the conclusion of the last swim meet.
All competitive swimmers need to be between the ages of 6 to 18.
Intermediate Swim: Participants should be able to swim at least 50 meters of freestyle, unassisted, without stopping. A basic understanding of freestyle and backstroke is required. Swimmers should know how to breathe to the side while swimming freestyle. Please note, the intermediate program is designed for swimmers with prior experience and is not intended as a "learn to swim" course. Swimmers who do not meet these criteria may be asked to join our Pre-Competitive program (under 12) or take additional swim lessons to build their skills.
Advanced Swim: Participants should have a basic understanding of all four competitive strokes, with competency (not mastery) in freestyle and backstroke. Swimmers should be able to swim 50 meters unassisted and without stopping in both freestyle and backstroke. While it is recommended that swimmers are familiar with diving from either the side or the starting block, it is not mandatory. Swimmers who do not meet these criteria may be asked to join the Intermediate or Pre-Competitive program.
Our team goals are:
Practices:
We have two different practices for this team – advanced and intermediate.
1. The advanced practice (8:15 AM to 10:00 AM) is generally for the older, high school level swimmer and/or those swimmers who have been involved with a club team during the autumn, winter and/or spring.
2. The intermediate practice (9:50 AM to 11:00 AM) is for those swimmers who are still developing their strokes and.or might not quite be ready for a longer practice.
** If you are unsure what level to enroll your swimmer in, the coaches can help determine that within the first week of practices.
Volunteer Requirement:
If your child(ren) are participating in Competitive Swimming (Intermediate or Advanced), we ask that your family volunteer at least once during the season. Volunteer opportunities are available through Swimtopia and can be done during swim practices or at Thursday meets. We also welcome extended family members or responsible children aged 14 and older to volunteer on your behalf—please contact us in advance if you plan to send a child.
We recognize that volunteering may not be possible for every family. If you require an alternative volunteer opportunity not listed in the Swimtopia Volunteer Section, please reach out to us by June 10th.
A $25 per family fee will be applied after the All-City Championship if you choose not to volunteer during the season. During registration, you'll have the option to opt out of volunteering by pre-paying this fee. Please note that even if you choose to opt out, families are still expected to volunteer if their child qualifies for the All-City Championship.
Competitive Swim Meets:
The athletes are encouraged to compete in our swim meets that are held generally on Thursday nights, from 5:15 PM to 9:15 PM (approximately). For the swimmer to be entered into the meet, he or she will need to sign-up in advance for that meet. This process will be discussed during the first week of practices. For the swimmer to be eligible for the league championship, called All-City, the swimmer must have participated in at least TWO swim meets.
The Olathe Cyclones’ Dive program is open to all skill levels and it is our mission to teach the sport of diving in a fun but safe environment. First and foremost, we teach proper safety and technique. Diving must be learned in the right steps and with the right progressions. All of that begins with proper technique foundation, both on the board and in the air. Although competition meets are offered, divers are not required to participate in them.
Practices:
We offer three one-hour practice session times for the divers: 9:00 AM, 10:00 AM and 11:00 AM. We ask the divers to arrive at practice fifteen minutes early to allow for stretching and warm-ups. You can choose the practice time that meets your family needs’ best; however, we do try to keep practice participants as even as possible to allow divers maximum time with the coaches/on the boards.
Competition Requirements:
Divers MUST meet the following criteria in order to be entered as a competitor for any meet:
7U: Perform two dives with a proper approach (jumps allowed)
9U: Perform three different dives with a proper approach (one jump allowed)
11U: Perform the different dives with a proper approach (no jumps allowed)
13U: Perform four dives from two different categories* with a proper approach
15U: Perform three voluntary dives from two categories* and two optional dives from two other categories
18U: Perform one voluntary dive and five optional dives from four categories
* Dive Categories: Backward, Forward, Inward, Reverse & Twist.
